ADHD Assessment

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is broadly characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Commonly ADHD presents in childhood and persists into adulthood, however it can also be left undetected throughout ones upbringing and present itself in adulthood.

Why assess for ADHD?

ADHD can cause challenges in many areas of life, such as: academic achievement, workplace functioning, regulating emotions, interpersonal and social skills, engaging in risk-taking behaviours all of which can lead to further challenges and, economic and financial burdens. Diagnosis of ADHD is the first step toward self-understanding and helps to guide recommendations for appropriate supports.

How are our ADHD assessments different?

Not all ADHD assessments are the same. At The Shellharbour Clinic, we provide a thorough and comprehensive assessment that helps us to determine whether your concerns are best explained by ADHD or another condition with similar symptoms (e.g., trauma history, anxiety, addiction history).

What are our ADHD assessment options?

You can choose between either an abbreviated or comprehensive ADHD assessment option:6

    • Abbreviated assessment: our abbreviated option is our cost-effective assessment and requires involvement of a GP. The assessment process still encompasses thorough testing and evaluation however only a brief feedback letter is provided to your GP who will discuss the findings with you.
    • Comprehensive assessment: The comprehensive assessment option includes a feedback session with a psychologist as well as a thorough report that explains the results of the assessment in detail and includes personalised recommendations. A GP is not needed for the comprehensive option.

    Our ADHD assessments involve:

    • Stage 1: A comprehensive clinical interview. This provides a developmental history, understanding of current concerns, and an assessment of ADHD symptoms.
    • Stage 2: Two testing sessions using evidence-based psychometric assessment tools to assess cognitive ability, performance-based measures of continuous sustained attention, and executive functioning. Quantitative questionnaires are also administered to measure ADHD symptoms and additional concerns.
    • Stage 3: The psychologist reviews all the gathered information, including supplementary documentation (e.g., school reports).
    • Stage 4: A feedback session and formal report which details the findings and provides recommendations for the individual moving forward.
